The Bat-Project
Geschrieben von: Gunnar Kühl - LK Englisch 13. Jahrgang

In the first semester of the school year 2006/2007 our intensive English course decided to work on a project. Our teacher Mrs. Liley had the great idea to make a bat project. Before the summer holidays 2006 we visited the "Noctalis", an exhibition about these flying mammals in Bad Segeberg, next to the "Kalkberg". The idea was to translate all the texts into English, because we heard that there are often visitors from other countries who do not understand German.

Mrs. Liley contacted the responsible persons in the “Noctalis” and on the 2nd of November we first met there. We divided the different areas of the “Noctalis” into different groups of up to 5 pupils. Then we wrote the German texts down from the information tags or took photos of them with a digital camera. We also got a "Noctalis passport" so that we were able to visit the Noctalis again whenever we wanted to, without paying the entrance fee. At home we translated the texts into English. Sometimes it was easy, but there were some problems, for example it wasn't that easy to find out the English names of some bats.

After a few weeks of intensive translation work we once met in the “Noctalis” again because Mrs. Liley wanted to check if all texts were translated. A group that took care of the technical conversion of our project decided that it would be the easiest thing to make a flyer out of our texts. These flyers will soon help the non German visitors of the “Noctalis” to get to know everything about these fascinating night animals.

It was a really interesting project for all of us. Because of the translations we learned a lot of new words and had to deal a lot with the English language during that time. Although we had to spend a lot of our free time, it was fun to us. Of course we’re all happy to have finished now, but it was an informative and creative school project.

The project was realized by Christopher Heins, Gunnar Kühl, Inga Döring, Sarah von Schemm, Laura Fischer, Zeki Sari, Jabbar Bayati, Stefan Teuscher, Markus Richter, Ricarda Wurtzel, Katharina Saalfeld, Mirco Weidmann, Eike Herdam, Jessica Sell, Wiebke Schulz, Lena Neuenfeldt and Henrike Kahl under the guidance of Carin Liley.
